What are the best free (or inexpensive) local activities for toddlers and preschoolers?

  • Barnes and Noble storytimes. New Hope Commons location: Tuesdays at 10 AM and Saturdays at 11 AM; Southpoint Mall location: Fridays at 10:30 AM
  • Borders Books (1807 Chapel Hill Blvd., Chapel Hill). Storytime on Wednesdays at 10 AM.
  • Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department has Toddler/Preschool Playtime for children 5 and under ($2 per child)
  • Chapel Hill Community Center (120 South Estes Drive, Chapel Hill). Parent-tot time every day from 10-12 from September to May.
  • Chapel Hill Public Library (100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill). Storytime for babies and toddlers. Registration sometimes needed; call ahead 919-968-2778.
  • Orange County Public Library (300 West Tryon Street, Hillsborough). Storytime. It is not as crowded as the Chapel Hill Library's storytime and sometimes they have special shows for young children like Rags to Riches Theater.
  • Southpoint Mall in Durham has an indoor playground next to the Food Court
  • Mothers Club playgroups!
  • Going to the park is #1; going to the library is #2 (especially if you get the books and take them to the park...)

What are some good, free (or inexpensive) local activities for elementary school-aged children?

  • Ackland Art Museum (S. Columbia Street, Chapel Hill). Adventure Sundays. Free family art tours at 2 PM each Sunday for children aged 5-9.
  • Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Department programs
  • Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department programs
  • Home Depot (3701 New Mount Moriah Road, Durham) offers workshops for children ages 5-12, on the first Saturday of the month, 9 AM - 12 PM.
  • Lowes Home Improvement (1807 Chapel Hill Blvd., Chapel Hill) has workshops for children
  • Michael's (New Hope Commons) offers art classes for children ages 5-12, every Saturday from 10 AM - 12 PM ($2 fee).

Where is the best place for the whole family to go on an outing?

  • Duke Forest (Durham) for a hike.
  • Fearrington Village (US 15-501 North between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro). Parents get to shop and eat; kids get to see cows and eat.
  • Jordan Lake (Apex)
  • Maple View Farm Country Store (6900 Rocky Ridge Road, Hillsborough) for ice cream
  • Museum of Life and Science (433 Murray Avenue, Durham)
  • North Carolina Museum of Art (2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh) on Friday nights is open late with few visitors. Eat in the restaurant which has great food and a kids' menu.
  • North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (11 West Jones Street, Raleigh). It has an annual Bugfest which is a favorite with kids!
  • North Carolina Zoo (Asheboro)
  • Pullen Park (off Western Blvd. by NC State University, Raleigh) is awesome. It has a carousel, train rides, paddle boats, playground. It's worth the drive!

  • July: Blueberry Picking; Carrboro Fourth of July Festivities
  • August: Blueberry Picking
  • September: Festifall on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill
  • October: North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh
  • November: Carrboro Halloween Carnival; Leaf piles!
  • December: Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade; Santa Train at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham; First Night in Raleigh
